Why Vitamin C Belongs in Your Morning Routine
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it helps neutralise free radicals, unstable molecules generated by sun exposure and pollution that can contribute to premature ageing. Alongside its antioxidant role, Vitamin C is widely studied for its ability to support a brighter, more even-looking complexion over time with consistent use.
Because Vitamin C can be sensitive to light and air, it's most effective in well-formulated products that maintain its stability, and it pairs particularly well with daily SPF, which helps protect the skin it's working to support. Introducing it in the morning, before sun exposure, is generally considered the most effective approach, though consistency matters more than exact timing.
When choosing a Vitamin C product, look for L-ascorbic acid, the most biologically active form, though it can be irritating for sensitive skin. If you're new to the ingredient or have reactive skin, look for gentler derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Start by applying it every other morning, and gradually increase to daily use as your skin builds tolerance. Store your Vitamin C in a cool, dark place, and discard it if it changes color significantly, as this indicates oxidation.
